Is the Bible True? Does it Matter?

Hosted Jointly by The New Canaan Jewish Group and Congregation Beth El at the home of Gary and Susan Singer.

We will examine the challenge of critical Biblical scholarship in reading the text of the Torah as containing truth. We will also study examples of the overlap between rabbinic com­mentary and interpretation and post-modern readings of the Bible.

Woman's Torah Reading Class

Date and time to be announced

If you are interested in learning to read Torah, please join Rabbi Fish as he presents the basics in a series of classes that will begin this fall. All participants will have a chance to showcase the skills that they have learned on Shabbat Shira – February 3, 2007.

Hebrew Reading and Conversation Class

Date, time and instructor to be announced

For anyone interested in learning to read Hebrew or wants to improve their Hebrew reading and conversational skills. The level of the class will depend upon the individuals enrolled, and if necessary, multiple classes will be formed.

A Taste of Torah

This community wide annual event will be held this year at Temple Shalom in Norwalk . Come and spend an evening of learning with your neighbors. Classes will be taught by members of our local area clergy.

Tuesdays, January 23 – May 8, 2007 at 8pm

A Course in Basic Judaism

Presented by the rabbis of the Norwalk/Westport Synagogue Council

Theme I: Where do Jews come from? The Bible as history, identity and destiny.

Theme II: Sacred Times: Shabbat, Holidays and Holy Days.

Theme III: Sacred Living: Mitzvot in daily life (kashrut, sexuality, lifecycle)

Theme IV: Sacred Moments: Prayer at home and in the synagogue

Theme V: Modern Transformations: Holocaust and Israel

Theme VI: Differences and Similarities- what are the modern movements?

Classes will meet at the UJA Federation office on the following Tuesdays from 8:00-9:30pm: January 23, 30. February 6, 13, 27. March 6, 13, 20, 27. April 17, 24. May 1 and 8.
