The Social Action Committee is responsible for engaging the members of Congregation Beth El in tikkun olam (repairing the world) through tzedakah/charity and social advocacy projects. Our projects involve putting Jewish values into action through helping others, taking care of our planet, supporting Israel and advocating for justice and human rights. Volunteers help create and organize projects and promote them throughout the synagogue community. Recent projects include clipping over $2,000 worth of grocery coupons for overseas military families and participation in a walk-a-thon for Camp Phoenix (a camp for children recovering from burns) which raised over $2,000. Future projects may include a drive to plant trees in Israel and a postcard campaign to remind President Obama not to forget the crisis in Darfur. The Social Action Committee also works with the Navasky Hebrew School children to help them plan projects for their Bar or Bat Mitzvot, and with the Nitzan Nursery School to run monthly tzedakah projects. These projects have included a toy drive for the Norwalk Emergency Shelter, making Rosh Hashanah cards for the residents of the Jewish Home for the Elderly, creating Thanksgiving baskets for the kosher food pantry at JFS and collecting movies for children at Norwalk Hospital. The Social Action Committee is chaired by Allison Pogany. For more information, please contact Allison through the office at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
